Increase Ventilation
When you’re taking a shower, open your bathroom windows to promote airflow in the room. If your bathroom has a ventilation fan, turn it on and leave it running for 20 minutes after the shower. Excess moisture leads to mold growth and a damp, steamy bathroom creates the right conditions.
When cooking on the stove, use the range hood fan and/or open windows. Steam from boiling water will add moisture to the air, increasing humidity and the chances of mold growth.
Use a Dehumidifier to Prevent Mold Growth
A dehumidifier helps to reduce the humidity in your home. Lower moisture levels in the air mean mold is less likely to develop. When shopping for a dehumidifier, choose one that is designed to treat the square footage of the room where moisture is a problem. Make sure to empty the reservoir regularly so the appliance will continue to operate properly.
Steam Clean the Carpets
If your home suffers from high humidity, mold will grow on or beneath your carpets. If mold is a problem, have your home’s carpets professionally cleaned at least once each year. If the carpet is old, replace it. Better yet, consider removing carpeting altogether. Hardwoods are a great choice for flooring, especially if family members suffer from allergies or asthma. Hardwoods are easier to clean and are less likely to support mold growth.
Encourage Airflow
Another way to prevent mold growth is by encouraging airflow throughout your home. Moving air will help to reduce moisture and circulate mold spores out of your home before they settle and begin to grow. Use window fans and ceiling fans to boost circulation indoors.
Hang Laundry to Dry Outdoors
When you hang clothes or damp towels to dry indoors, the moisture evaporates and contributes to higher humidity in the home. If using the clothes dryer is not an option, hang your laundry outdoors to dry. Choose a warm spot with good airflow that’s not in direct sunlight. You’ll save on the electric bill and help reduce moisture in your home.
